2011 Season Preview - by Coach Brennan
Since our spring season is starting off cold and windy- it has given me (Coach Brennan) lots of time to work on technique with the returning varsity rowers and new novice rowers on the ergs. With it being my first year coaching at Bay Shore, the girls have been very coachable and are beginning to make the changes I have asked of them to improve on their rowing technique. During tryouts alone over half of the returning varsity had pulled their personal best scores on their 2k's. (2,000 meter piece on the erg)
This year is a building year for Coxswains; Arianna Wendt- will be coxing this year and will use her knowledge from her last year's novice rowing experience to make our varsity boats faster. Nobody knows how to motivate rowers more then a former rower does! Shannon Fox, Tess George, and Farrah Leone are true novice coxswains and I am looking forward to coaching them on how to keep a straight course and how to motivate their rowers during practice and races.
Our Novice Eight is looking strong and with hard work and proper technique the girls will be in great shape come time for the New York State Championships in Saratoga.
Our Returning Varsity has the potential to do great things. With eight returning seniors (Shannon DeCamp, Jillian Defina, Daniella Defonte, Olivia Fiore, Michelle Garcia, Victoria Maresca, Bryana Romanzi, and Julia Wendt) I have great leaders to lead the way for the rest of the team. Seniors Shannon DeCamp and Bryana Romanzi will be attending college on rowing scholarships. The juniors and sophomores on the team are showing great speed and I'm excited to watch them race this spring!
For our first race in Greenwich CT, the Lady Marauders will be racing in a Senior 8, Junior 4, Light Weight 4, and Novice 8. I am looking forward to see how our team matches up against teams that have been training all year. Please come cheer on the Lady Marauders at our home race at Dowling on Sunday April 10th.
"Not everybody wins, and certainly not everybody wins all of the time. But once you get into your boat and push off, tie into your shoes and foot stretchers, then "lean on the oars," you have indeed won far more than those who have never tried" |
