The 2011 season is the most unpredictable season to date for Coach Dan and Coach Flick. With 19 girls on the roster and only 9 of them with Varsity experience, there will be some bumps in the road for sure. Combine that with what is arguably the county’s toughest league (Sachem East (1), Northport (2) & West Islip (3) were all league champs last year and due to league realignment, ended up in the same league this year and are all favorites to win the county title) and that promises to be quite a challenge! The good news is that 15 of the 19 players are underclassmen and should be back with the squad next year.
The team opens up at home on Thursday, September 8 with a scrimmage against League III opponent West Babylon and Suffolk county runner up West Islip. The girls will follow that up with another home scrimmage on Saturday, September 10 against two Nassau County “AA” playoff teams (Farmingdale and Syosset) and 2 Suffolk County playoff teams (Kings Park (“A”) & Walt Whitman (“AA”). On Tuesday, September 13 they will face League I opponent Brentwood in the first of two home Non-League games. They will close out the pre-season tune up matches with one final home scrimmage against League III opponent Newfield. The other NL contest will see Centereach (League III) come to town.
The 2011 team is lead by Senior Tri-Captains Angelica Horne (DEF), Stephanie Rios (MF) and Kristin Seiferth (MF). Look for Kristin to use her dangerous left foot to make crosses and shots from her outside MF position. Angelica and Stephanie will help provide the team with depth at their positions. The team returns two all-league players from a year ago in sophomores Jillian Oross (Def) and the versatile Corinne Schmidt (DEF/MF/FOR). Both will be asked to contribute even more than a year ago with that year of experience under their belt.
Returning players Estefania Navas (MF/DEF), Aracely Romero (F), Yesica Alberto (F), & Erica Silhan (MF/F), should provide the team some depth and look to establish themselves as key players. This year, senior Alba Reyes will take on the extremely important role of team manager.
As for the newcomers to the team, we welcome three juniors: Keyanna Jones (GK), Brooke Puttick (GK), and Gabriela Serrano (DEF), three sophomores: Brianne Garrett (MF), Christina Guzman (DEF) and Erin Ilchuk (DEF), two freshmen: Kayla Lockridge (DEF/MF) and Casey Imbasciani (MF) and two 8th graders: Sofia Leone (MF) and Kiera Metzger (MF/F). All of the rookies will be asked to contribute and have a chance to play important roles on the team for years to come.
